Almost Forty Percent of PC Users Never Back Up Data

It seems that we Americans don’t learn well from our past mistakes. A recent study sponsored by online storage provider shows that, while most computer users have lost important data due to PC crashes, 39% of us have never backed up our files.

The results were especially surprising, given that nearly half of those surveyed also said that they would be unable to replace all of their information, should their hard drives go down. Even more alarming was the finding that 82% of those surveyed store large amounts of data in only one place: their primary PC.

A national Harris Interactive survey of 597 computer users reveals:

  1. Nearly 3 out of 5 personal computer users have lost an electronic file they thought they had sufficiently stored
  2. 1 in 4 users frequently back up digital files, even when 85% of computer users say they are very concerned about losing important digital data
  3. 82% keep a hard copy of important documents they've also saved electronically
  4. 37% of the survey's respondents admitted to backing up their files less than once per month
  5. 9% admitted they have never backed up their files
  6. More than 22% said backing up information is on their to-do list, but they seldom do it

Photos are the most common file types stored, with 55% of users trusting their hard drives with their pictures. Music, resumes, documents and even critical financial information are also stored exclusively in digital format. Despite their failure to back up their hard drive contents, the study shows that most computer users treasure the information they store on their machines.

62% of users said they would spend money to recover lost data, with a significant portion, 27%, stating that they would “pay whatever it takes” to do so. Half also said they would rather give up a year’s vacation time than part with the files on their PCs.
